If you keep or own a dog you must obtain a licence for the dog from the Council.

You cannot obtain a licence for the dog unless the dog has been microchipped. You will need to provide this microchip number when applying for a licence.
 

Single Dog Licence - Fees

A single dog licence is £12.50 and is valid for one year.

This fee is reduced to £5 if your dog is sterilised.

If you are aged 65 or older, a dog licence for your first dog is free, and you are entitled to a concessionary fee of £5 for any additional dog.

Concessionary licences of £5 are also available if, at the time of registration, you receive any of the following income related benefits:

• Universal Credit
• State Pension Credit
• Income Support
• Housing Benefit
• Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
• Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
• Working Tax Credit

Please note that evidence must be provided when applying for a Concessionary dog licence fee.
 

Block Dog Licence

A block licence is available to owners of three or more unsterilized bitches which breed between them less than 3 litters in a 12 month period or not less than 3 dogs which are registered with any of the following:

(a) The Kennel Club;
(b) The Irish Coursing Club;
(c) The Masters of Foxhounds Association;
(d) The Masters of Harriers and Beagles Association;
(e) The Northern Ireland Masters of Hounds Association; and
(f) The International Sheepdog Society.

(Applicants must supply certificates of registration with these organisations along with their application).

Exemptions For Needing a Dog Licence

• A puppy under six months old and kept by the person who is also the keeper of the mother that gave birth to the puppy
• An assistance dog used by a disabled person
• A police dog

Penalties For NOT Licensing Your Dog

Anyone who is found to be keeping a dog without a licence is liable for a Fixed Penalty Notice fine of £80.00 for the offence with a discounted amount of £50.00 if paid within 10 days.

Such a person is also liable for prosecution where the maximum fine in Court is £1000

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s online dog licensing service is provided in conjunction with the Council’s software provider Tascomi through a new service called Council Direct.

Before you can licence your dog you will need to create an account for Council Direct – please follow instructions given on the link below.   Residents who previously used Ballymoney, Coleraine, Moyle and Limavady’s online dog licensing system your login will still work.
