Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council does a lot of work to ensure it is maximising the level of collectable rate income it receives. One of the key areas of work is that of vacant properties. It is important to make sure that properties are properly identified as being vacant. Land and Property Services carry out continuous monitoring of properties listed as vacant, using all data sources available including those supplied by the Council. However where possible, the Building Control Department of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council will work in partnership with Land and Property Services and assist them in the vacancy inspection of small batches of targeted properties. Staff will survey properties to identify if they are actually occupied meaning that the Council will receive rate income for all relevant properties.
The Building Control Department is at the heart of the information gathering process and plays a key role in maximising the Council’s rateable income however legislative responsibility for this function ultimately lies with Land and Property Services.
