The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has said we should take time to reach out to our neighbours during this festive season.

In a Christmas message to the Borough, Alderman Maura Hickey explained: “This is a time of year that many people look forward to. During the Holiday period we have a chance to meet up with family and friends, especially those we may not have seen in a while. It’s a time to exchange presents, socialise with each other and enjoy a well-deserved break.

“But for many people, this isn’t what they experience. Those living alone, the elderly or the ill can feel isolated from the celebrations. This year I would urge everyone to think about those people in their communities who may not be having a happy Christmas - reach out to them and be a good neighbour during this season of goodwill.

“Time, company and a listening ear are the presents they would like to receive this year.”

“As Mayor, it’s been a busy lead up to the Christmas period. I’ve taken part in switching on the Christmas lights in various locations across the Borough, which has been a highlight of my term so far.

“The joy of the children at these events is infectious and it was clear to see what a magical time of year it is for them all.

“Throughout the year I have attended events right across the Borough. I’ve witnessed at first hand the good work going on in many communities. I would like to take this opportunity to commend those who work so hard to improve the lives of those around them.

“Finally, I would like to wish everyone a happy and peaceful Christmas, as we look forward with anticipation to what the New Year will bring.”
