Celebrate good food practices this Christmas

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Environmental Health team is backing a new Christmas campaign from the Food Standards Agency.
It aims to create a less wasteful festive period for everyone.
In the run-up to Christmas, the Council will be advising residents on a range of issues from grocery shopping to freezing food.
Research has shown that food waste costs the average family £470 every year – and Christmas is a time of year when this type of waste can peak.
Adding her support to the campaign, the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Alderman Maura Hickey, said: “We all have a duty to try and cut down on waste, and I hope our residents take the advice of our Environmental Health team on board as they try to raise awareness of this important issue. If we all made a change, no matter how small, it could have a big effect on the amount of waste we send to landfill every year.”
The Mayor also added “Before you plan your Christmas meals think about how many people you’ll be cooking for and your portion sizes. When you’re out shopping take a supply of bags with you so you can separate out all your raw and ready-to-eat foods, as this will cut down on cross-contamination. There’s still a number of weeks left until Christmas Day so if you want to really plan ahead why not think about storing cooked foods in the freezer – this could help you cut down waste as well as time spent in the kitchen.
