Aghanloo and Magilligan Community Associations recently joined together to coordinate two evenings of traditional music.
The events were supported by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Good Relations team as a way of encouraging people to use both community buildings, which are shared spaces that are open and welcoming to everyone.
At Magilligan Community Centre, a focus on Ulster Scots culture included performances by Darren Milligan on the Highland pipes and Scottish small pipes with dancing from the Sollus School of Highland Dance. Aghanloo Community Association reciprocated by hosting an evening of Irish culture with entertainment from Uillean piper Eoin Orr and the Pringle School of Irish Dancers.
John Thompson from Aghanloo Community Association commented: “We really enjoyed holding this event in our centre and were happy to work with our neighbours in Magilligan to plan these evenings which everyone enjoyed.”
Community worker Leona Ferris from Magilligan added: “It was a pleasure to work with the Community Association at Aghanloo and hopefully these events have instigated the beginning of many more collaborations between the two communities in the future.”
Among those who attended the event in Magilligan was the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Richard Holmes. He said: “I greatly enjoyed the musical evening and I wish both groups continued success as they work together on the future use of both centres.
“This venture coincided with Council’s Shared Space project delivered by our Good Relations team. Projects like this provide an important opportunity to showcase spaces and places throughout our Borough, to increase footfall in our centres, welcoming those from different cultural traditions and celebrating our diversity together.”
This project received financial support from The Executive Office as part of the District Councils Good Relations Programme and supports the T:BUC strategy (Together Building a United Community).
