Council honours Holocaust Memorial Day 2016

To mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2016, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council hosted an evening of reflection on Wednesday 27th January 2016 at Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre in Limavady.

The event focused on the importance of remembering and a Holocaust Memorial exhibition was displaid. Charlie Warmington, guest speaker, provided attendees with an insight into why it is important to remember the Holocaust.  Reflecting on the legacy of the Holocaust, he shared his own awareness of how his family was affected as a result of the atrocity.

The Memorial exhibition was comprised primarily of work from local community representatives who attended Holocaust Educational Projects from the North East Region. The exhibition was an expression of their experiences having visited Auschwitz Birkenau and studied the Holocaust. The theme for remembering Holocaust Memorial Day this Year was Don’t Stand By.

Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Councillor Michelle Knight-McQuillan feels it is essential we remember the Holocaust and honour the millions who lost their lives during it, she said, “I am delighted that Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council held this Holocaust Memorial Event.

“To listen to someone speak who had personal experience of the atrocity and the lasting affect it has on survivors was a real privilege. The legacy of the Holocaust cannot be forgotten, it is imperative that we learn lessons from the past and take steps to challenge hatred and persecution.”
