Good Relations educational programmes mark Northern Ireland Centenary

As the centenary of the founding of Northern Ireland approaches, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Councils Good Relations team would like to invite the public to participate in the first of our educational programmes being delivered as part of our contribution to Council’s NI100 programme.
Entitled Ethical and Shared Remembering: Remembering a Decade of Change and Violence 1912-1922, the programme is being delivered by The Junction.
Background: The events of 1912 - 1922 changed the course of history on the island of Ireland. From being a part of the British Empire it changed to being divided into an independent state on the one hand and a devolved administration within the UK on the other. To understand the why and how of any of the events it is important to look at the preceding events.
The Junction's Ethical and Shared Remembering Project has been involved since the beginning of the Decade of Centenaries (2012) in exploring the history of that period with particular attention to specific events. The project is delivered through an approach that is deeply respectful of the inherited historical narratives of participants while engaging in an open and honest exploration of all that happened.
The programme is being delivered online over 4 sessions. To get the most out of the programme it is important that you participate in all sessions as follows:
- Thursday 14th January 2.30 – 4.00 pm. The Home Rule debate and the Solemn Ulster Covenant
- Thursday 21st January 2.30 – 4.00 pm. The Great War (1914-1918) and its aftermath
- Thursday 28th January 2.30 – 4.00 pm. Nationalist insurrection: The Easter Rising 1916 and its aftermath
- Thursday 4th February 2.30 – 4.00 pm. Heroism and sacrifice. The Battle of the Somme (July 1916)
With the centenary of the establishment of Northern Ireland taking place in May 2021, these sessions can be seen as preparation for the 6-session course which will follow from this; Partition; What did it do for us. The second programme will explore how it came about, its implementation, and its consequences. This course is scheduled to follow immediately after the 4-session course.
