Her Majesty The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh visited The Causeway Coast and Glens Borough on Tuesday 28th June.
The Royal couple began the day at The Giant’s Causeway, where they toured the Visitor Centre, and viewed the iconic World Heritage Site. They then travelled to Bushmills Village where they attended an Act of Remembrance, after which the Queen unveiled a bronze sculpture of Robert Quigg VC. Following the event in Bushmills, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were guests of honour at a lunch hosted by the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Alderman Maura Hickey at Portrush Golf Club. The lunch was attended by 120 guests to celebrate the voluntary and selfless service of citizens in the Borough.
In the afternoon, the Royal party arrived at Coleraine Railway Station, and travelled by steam train to Bellarena Railway station to unveil a plaque to mark the opening of the new platform. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were joined on the train by a group of local school children from Ballymoney, and greeted on the platform on arrival in Bellarena by children from local schools.
Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Alderman Maura Hickey commented, “It was an honour to host Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh in our Borough, a privilege to be part of such an historic occasion and to host a lunch for citizens in the Borough who have given selfless service through charity work, community service and fundraising activities.
