‘Irish History Starts Here’ Exhibition Now Open In Coleraine

The Irish History Starts Here exhibition is now open in Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Coleraine Museum at Coleraine Town Hall until 10th September.

Visitors can explore the extraordinary history behind the oldest known settlement in Ireland - here at Mountsandel nearly 10,000 years ago – as well as Ireland’s first village at Corrstown, Portrush. The exhibition goes on to discover how Coleraine itself was the first Planted town of King James l Official Plantation in the 17th Century.

The exhibition continues detailing the role Coleraine has plaid in the more recent history of Ireland including trade and industry, the two World Wars and four hundred years of people visiting and recording the extraordinary landscape. Featured in the displays are some of the material from Coleraine Museum’s major collections - Archaeology, Hugh Thomson, Sam Henry and Coleraine Battery.

Collections Access Officer, Sarah Carson said, “Coleraine has a remarkable history and this is reflected in Coleraine Museum’s extraordinary collection. It is fantastic to take this opportunity to share some of the many highlights of the collection through this exhibition. I encourage everyone to call in to Coleraine Town Hall and see the exhibition.”

Within the exhibition there are fun interactive activities to get involved in for all the family to enjoy. These include colouring a Hugh Thomson illustration, jigsaw puzzles, a story cube game, and more.

A talk on highlights of the exhibition will also be held at Coleraine Town Hall on Thursday 25th August at 7.30pm. Speakers will include local historian and author, Ronnie Gamble, Nic Wright of Hearthside Heritage and Sarah Carson, Collections Access Officer. Everyone is very welcome to come along to this free event.

The exhibition is open until 10th September, Tuesday to Saturday, 11am – 4pm. Entry is free. For further information please contact Coleraine Museum’s Collections Access Officer, Sarah Carson on 028 7034 7213.
