NEW SPORTS CLUB FOR YOUNG PEOPLE – CAUSEWAY TRAMPOLINE CLUB

Causeway Coast and Glens Sports Development (Coleraine and Ballymoney areas) have been working hard behind the scenes to create and develop a recreational and competitive trampoline club to meet the needs of interested young trampoline enthusiasts!

Trampolining has become an extremely popular form of exercise, both for fun and engagement among the Borough’s young people. The sport’s popularity has come as no surprise as trampolining gained its Olympic status as recently as 2000 at the Sydney Games!

Causeway Trampoline Club will commence on Wednesday 13th January 2016 and run for 8 consecutive weeks before taking a break for Easter.  The timetabling is as follows:

Coleraine:

Club for 6 to 8 year olds; 3:15pm to 4:15pm; Coleraine Leisure Centre
Club for 9 to 10 year olds; 4:15pm to 5:15pm; Coleraine Leisure Centre
Club for 11 to 12 year olds; 5:15pm to 6:15pm; Coleraine Leisure Centre
Club for 13+ year olds; 6:15pm to 7:15pm; Coleraine Leisure Centre

Ballymoney:

Club for 8 year olds upwards; 8:30pm to 9:30pm; Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre

The Club costs £45 for the 8 week class and is now open for enrolments!

Roger Downey, Sports Development & Physical Recreation Manager (Coleraine) said; “We will be launching our Causeway Trampoline Club in January 2016 and what’s really exciting about this new club is the fact that we will be operating the Club from two sites; with afternoon sessions in Coleraine and evening sessions in Ballymoney”.

John Fall, Sports Development Manager (Ballymoney) echoed Roger’s comments adding, “This is something we have been building towards for a while and it’s going to be exhilarating to see young people from our Borough having the opportunity to participate both recreationally and competitively in trampolining”.

Causeway Trampoline Club gymnasts will commence with the basic skills and develop to single, multiple somersaults and twisting skills.  Within constructive classes each gymnast will be given the opportunity to achieve Awards as they develop and have the option of becoming a competitive gymnast where they can potentially progress through Regional and National/ International structures.

The Club will be led up by Stuart Harper, a senior club coach who has coached at high performance level for many years now.  Stuart was an international gymnast himself, retiring from competitive trampolining after competing in the 2005 World Championships.  Since 2003, Stuart has had gymnasts representing Ireland at World Championships every year and members of his other Club (Kestrel trampoline club, Newtownards) are on both the Northern Ireland and Ireland squads. In 2015 his gymnasts have taken silver and bronze medals at the NDP British Championships. Aswell as coaching, Stuart is also an international judge and is currently Chairperson of schools gymnasts and trampoline discipline.

Stuart has already drawn up his aspirations for the new Council led Causeway Trampoline Club, namely; achieve qualification to the Northern Ireland championships in June; obtain representation from Causeway Coast and Glens Borough schools in the Northern Ireland schools championships; achieve qualification from Northern Ireland schools to zonal round and develop gymnasts to British championship qualification level for January 2017.

The Trampoline Club will cater for Recreation and Competitive participation with each child attending the club benefiting from constructive, high level coaching; an ability related training plan, strength and flexibility training; the opportunity to participate in competitive sport; development from team sport environment and the importance of physical activity.
