New town centre banners unveiled in Dungiven and Limavady

Local artists have brought colourful creativity to Dungiven and Limavady with the installation of new town centre banners which tell the story of the area and promote the importance of ‘Shop Eat Enjoy Local’.
Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Town and Village Management Team, in cooperation with local business and community representatives, initiated the scheme earlier this year and the artistic banners are now in place for everyone to enjoy.
The designs were selected following a public art competition which was enthusiastically embraced in both areas. Many of the artworks have been inspired by local heritage and they highlight the artists’ pride in their towns.
In Limavady, 116 entries were received from a wide range of participants, including Cub Scouts, North West Regional College students, local Men’s Shed members, and pupils from both Limavady Grammar School and Limavady High School.
In Dungiven, despite the art competition being launched at the height of COVID-19 restrictions, a total of 53 entries were received from local artists ranging in age from 10 to 60+, thanks to the efforts of Dungiven Regeneration Club.
Competition entries showcased a wide variety of artistic styles, ranging from watercolour and oil paintings to pencil and crayon drawings, photography, poetry and computer-generated imagery.
After much deliberation, a panel of independent judges selected 24 artworks for public display in Limavady and 14 for Dungiven.
Offering his congratulations to all those who took part, the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Alderman Mark Fielding said: “It is very encouraging to see this successful project create such a warm welcome for residents, shoppers and visitors as the Borough’s economic recovery from the pandemic continues.
“The colourful and visually engaging artworks reflect the people, history and heritage of both towns and I would like to thank all those who helped to make the project such a success.”
In addition to having their artwork on public display, each winning artist was awarded a £50 Causeway Coast and Glens Gift Card which is redeemable at a range of local businesses. The Gift Card is a great way to support the local economy at this time as it ensures your money is spent within the borough. The public art displays in Limavady and Dungiven follow a successful pilot project in Ballycastle during the summer of 2019. Council Officers are now making plans to extend the scheme to Ballymoney and Coleraine.
