School children in the Borough become Streetwise!

Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council’s Environmental Services Department Coleraine, in conjunction with Coleraine Home Accident and Prevention Committee, were pleased to coordinate the annual Streetwise event in partnership with a range of other agencies across the Borough from 7th-10th June 2016.

Over a 3 day period from Tuesday 7th June 2016, approximately 500 primary seven school children from across the Borough visited St Malachy’s Pastoral Centre, Coleraine to be educated on dangers that they may face in everyday life. Teaching was carried out in an interactive manner with opportunities for the children to have hands on experience of what to do in a case of emergency.

Streetwise is an educational initiative to promote safety and develop community awareness to prepare pupils for the transition to secondary level education. It aims to educate pupils to become more aware of personal and home safety, to avoid becoming victims of crime and to foster good citizenship and relations with various authorities. Other scenarios included recycling and the environment, electrical safety, safety when using buses, cycle safety, fire safety and care on the beaches, to name but a few.

Various bodies were involved with teaching and skill transfer at the event such as the PSNI Roads Policing, NI Fire & Rescue Service, NHSCT Health Visitors, St John Ambulance, Maritime & Coastguard Agency, Translink (Ulsterbus), Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council Recycling Officer and Home Safety Officer, Northern Ireland Electricity Networks, Cancer Focus and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).  Scenario and fresh fruit kindly provided by Tesco Coleraine.
