A representative from Southport visited the Causeway Coast and Glens this week to share his experience of hosting The Open Golf Championship.
Mark Catherall from Sefton Council plaid a key role in the hugely successful British Open Championship held at Royal Birkdale this year.
The visit was organised by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council in conjunction with Tourism NI as planning begins for the return of The Open to Royal Portrush in 2019. Mark provided an overview of the event to multi-agency stakeholders including key operational elements and resources.
The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Joan Baird OBE, said: “We first met Mark during a visit to The Open at Royal Birkdale in July, where his enthusiasm and knowledge was clear to see. I would like to thank him for taking the time to visit us and share his experiences which will prove invaluable as Portrush prepares to host this huge sporting event.”
Kerrie McGonigle Destination Manger said: “The Open is predicted to make a significant financial impact on our local economy and create a tangible legacy in the Causeway Coast and Glens. With just under two years until the event is staged in Portrush it is crucial that we have an awareness of what lies ahead and an ability to deliver a world class experience.”
Following a series of meetings, Mark visited the Giant’s Causeway and was able to explore part of the Causeway Coastal Route.
