Startrack’ project a must for local children this summer

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, working in partnership with a range of bodies including local clubs, schools and community partnerships, is encouraging everyone to get involved in a scheme that put British track and field athlete Jessica Ennis on the road to Olympic glory. The scheme, ‘Star Track’, which runs throughout the United Kingdom, will take place in Limavady from 12th August until 14th August, at the 3G pitches on Scroggy Road from 10.00am and 2.00pm each day. Young people are encouraged to get involved in the project which is credited with helping young athletes transition from school to club athletics. Each ‘Startrack’ scheme is led by UKA qualified coaches with more than 20,000 children taking part each year. Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Health for Life coordinator, Kieran Coyle commented: “Parents and guardians seeking to keep their children entertained and active over the summer season should consider signing up for this scheme. It’s a perfect balance of fun athletics in a safe and enjoyable environment. ‘“The scheme is UKA's flagship grassroots athletics programme, aiming to give eight to fifteen year olds real athletics experience while helping them to develop skills. This programme also benefits children with no experience of athletics. Even footballers need to have good balance, agility balance, speed and strength to throw a ball, skills which are strengthened and developed during the three days. We may even discover something new… such as who was the town’s first ever Olympic gold medalist! ‘I would ask anyone considering taking part in the ‘Startrack’ scheme to consider also joining the Mini/junior Valleys, the club at present meet up every Saturday at 11:15am at Roe Valley Leisure Centre at a cost of £1 per session. These sessions will provide a taster of what is expected during Startrack programme.’ ‘Roe Valley Leisure Centre is pleased to work in partnership with Valley Running Club AC to provide local children with this top class coaching.
