Wed, September 28, 2016

The best of Europe’s surf kayak talent will descend on Portrush next month as the resort gets set to host the British Surf Kayak Championships and the Home International Surf Kayak Championships.

The six-day event begins at East Strand on October 4th and continues until October 9th.

Organised by the Canoe Association of Northern Ireland, it promises to showcase the very best of local talent and beyond.

The Mayor of the Causeway Coast and Glens, Alderman Maura Hickey, said: "As a Council, we are delighted to support this event. It provides a fantastic opportunity, not only in terms of tourism and boosting the local economy, but in showcasing the region as a top venue for events of this kind.

“East Strand is an ideal location for both competitors and spectators alike and I would urge everyone to show their support to those taking part. I hope the athletes and their supporters enjoy what the region has to offer and are able to make the most of our fantastic facilities and visitor attractions.”

Ashley Hunter, CANI’s Development Manager, said: "We have athletes taking part from Northern Ireland, Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales and Spain. Our local competitors will be hoping to repeat their previous successes and the team includes former world champions and current Irish and European medalists. I know they’re looking forward to competing at this home event, where they can showcase their talents to a local audience.

“Portrush has a great reputation among the surf kayaking fraternity and we are all looking forward to the action. I would like to thank all those who are supporting us, including Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Portrush Yacht Club, Sport NI, Craft Clothing Ulster Paddlesurf Club and River Lake Sea."

This event is billed as a lead in to the Surf Kayak World Championships which will be held in Portrush next year.

It gives competitors a chance to test out the challenges of the East Strand waters, ahead of the global competition.
