Local primary schools in Causeway Coast and Glens are getting into the spirit of Good Relations Week 2025 by participating in “Exploring Cultural Diversity” workshops.
The workshops organised by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Good Relations team have been very well received by local schools over the past few years.
The sessions are delivered by people who have called the Borough home for many years now, but who started their lives somewhere else.
Each person who participates shares more about the culture of the country they were born in, while also explaining how they came to be living in Causeway Coast and Glens.
Workshop activities include music, dance, art and craft and this year’s theme of ‘Connect’ for Good Relations Week 2025 helps encourage the children to understand both the similarities and differences between various cultures compared with their own.
Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Councillor Oliver McMullan, commented on the importance of this initiative, saying: “This programme delivered by Council’s Good Relations team provides children attending local schools with the chance to meet people from other countries, find out about other cultures and ask questions in a safe environment.
“This project is a great opportunity to raise awareness of all the other cultures and traditions that add to the richness and diversity of our Council area”.
Good Relations Officer, Joy Wisener, added: “We’re delighted to have 14 local primary schools participating in the programme this year, which is running from September to December. Eight of the workshops will take place during Good Relations Week this October.
“In previous years feedback from both pupils and teachers has been very positive, with a recognition that this project has helped to deliver on parts of the curriculum which focus on mutual respect, understanding and the value of diversity in schools.”
The Exploring Cultural Diversity programme is being delivered as part of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Good Relations Programme, supported by The Executive Office as part of the Together Building a United Community strategy.
