The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Councillor Steven Callaghan and fellow elected members gathered outside Council’s civic headquarters in Coleraine this morning for a flag-raising ceremony to mark Commonwealth Day 2024.

Hundreds of Commonwealth flags are being raised in unison and flown in prominent locations throughout the UK and the 56 Commonwealth nations. Cloonavin will also be illuminated blue this evening to celebrate the occasion.

Leading this morning’s ceremony, Councillor Callaghan said: “I am delighted to welcome you here today as we raise this flag alongside others across the globe and continue this great tradition to commemorate Commonwealth Day.

“This marks the beginning of a week-long series of events and activities happening worldwide – including faith and civic gatherings, debates, school assemblies and cultural events.

“Commonwealth Day is a positive way for us to join with others throughout this global family, allowing us to come together in a spirt of understanding to celebrate our shared values, including the promotion of peace, democracy, the rule of law and human rights.”

The theme for Commonwealth Day 2024, and the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, is ‘One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth’.

The theme highlights how the 56 member countries must harness their strengths by building resilience, unlocking potential, leveraging the 'Commonwealth Advantage' and fostering a connected, digital Commonwealth. This transformation is vital to ensure a resilient common future where no one is left behind.
