Freedom of the Borough
Conferment of the Freedom of the Borough is Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s highest civic accolade, reserved for those who have made an outstanding contribution to the area and recognises exceptional contributions to public life or national standing.
The basis of this award is an 1885 Act of Parliament that the Council of every Borough may admit to be Honorary Freeman of the Borough persons of distinction and any persons who have rendered eminent services to the Borough.
Conferring honours on individuals and organisations and is a tangible expression of the high esteem in which the recipients are held by Council and the people of the Borough.

Northern and Western Health and Social Care Trusts
Conferred 19th April 2024
Northern and Western Health and Social Care Trusts have been granted the Freedom of the Borough, honouring the selfless and high-quality lifesaving care they provide to local patients.
Royal Air Force
Conferred 8th April 2022
The Royal Air Force have been granted the Freedom of the Borough, in recognition of: “100 years of service, and in acknowledgement of the vital air and ground defence roles which they continue to provide for the security of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”.
Royal Portrush Golf Club
Conferred 21st May 2021
Royal Portrush Golf Club have been granted the Freedom of the Borough, in recognition of its successful hosting of The 148th Open in 2019, golf’s original and most international championship.
Joan Christie CVO OBE
Conferred 11th May 2018
Joan Christie CVO OBE has been granted the Freedom of the Borough, recognising her dedicated and outstanding service to the Borough since she became HM The Queen’s official representative in 2008.
Sir Denis Desmond KCVO CBE
Conferred 27th April 2018
Sir Denis Desmond KCVO CBE has been granted the Freedom of the Borough, in recognition of his dedicated and outstanding service as the Sovereign’s personal representative since 2000.
Mervyn Whyte
Conferred 2nd February 2018
Mervyn Whyte has been granted the Freedom of the Borough, in recognition of his services to the North West 200. Under his guidance and direction, the event has become Ireland’s biggest outdoor sporting attraction.
