Magilligan Strand Speed Trials

By the 1920s official events were being organised by local enthusiasts. One of the most frequently used motorcycle courses in the north of Ireland was Magilligan Strand, Co. Londonderry. On many occasions championship races were held along the shore in the form of ‘speed trials’ that stretched e.g. 5, 10, 50 or even 100 miles. While the beach environment was very harsh on both rider and machine, it was often preferred by the spectators who enjoyed a full view of all the competitors as they repeated the flat, sandy circuit to cover the allotted distance.

Initially hugely popular, the sand races attracted competitors from across the British Isles. However, as more appropriate road circuits became available, organised club racing on Magilligan Strand was eventually abandoned during the late 1930s.
