Tue, September 07, 2021

The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has visited Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre to view a new exhibition by Belfast based artist Susan Hughes.

The West Light exhibition is inspired by memories and place within the landscape and sea, with a focus on being part of the culture and history of a place.

Speaking after his visit, the Mayor, Councillor Richard Holmes said: “I was delighted to have this opportunity to meet with Susan and find out more about her new exhibition.

“Some of her works incorporate old maps of Belfast, which show how the city looked over 100 years ago. This is an area I’ve always been interested in as well, so it was fascinating to see how she has used these.”

“The return of our arts centres after a difficult period for the industry is an encouraging step forward, especially as they give an important platform for artists like Susan to showcase their talent and creativity.”

The daughter of a birdwatcher, Susan has always been drawn to coastal locations, and has completed residencies in Ireland, Norway and Iceland.

Susan received a distinction in her MFA in 2021 from the University of Ulster and received the Centre for Contemporary Art and Platform Arts Graduate Awards, alongside being shortlisted for the Royal Dublin Society DS graduate award.

The exhibition is free to view and continues until October 2nd.
