Roe Valley Arts Centre is delighted to present acclaimed folk singer-songwriter Michael McGovern live in concert on Saturday, June 6.
Glasgow-born McGovern has quickly established himself as one of the most compelling voices in contemporary folk, known for his poetic lyricism, intricate fingerpicked guitar work, and richly evocative storytelling.
His debut album Highfield Suite, produced by Bill Shanley, earned widespread critical acclaim for its intimate, reflective sound.
His follow-up release Thin White Road expands his sound with full-band arrangements alongside saxophone and choir.
Reviews have praised the album’s ambition and narrative depth, with Kevin Bryan (Morning Star) described McGovern’s song writing as drawing on literary influences such as Steinbeck and Laurie Lee, praising his “exquisite fingerpicked guitar work and compelling vocals” and the richly rewarding nature of his musical landscape.
McGovern’s growing reputation has also been recognised by fellow artists, with songwriter Paul Brady describing his work as “an unexpected gem”, and actor Paul Mescal praising his songs as deeply moving and timeless.
For audiences, this concert offers a rare opportunity to experience a rising artist in an intimate live setting before his name reaches an event wider audience. McGovern’s music is ideal for listeners drawn to artists such as Laura Marling, Leonard Cohen, and Fleet Foxes — combining lyrical depth with expansive, atmospheric sound.
