The Deputy Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has welcomed members of the Education Authority’s Youth Voice group to Cloonavin.
Councillor Ashleen Schenning recently met with the young people along with Youth Leader Chris Nichol. Made up of 15 to 21-year-olds from the Borough, the group is taking part in the two-year programme with the Education Authority in partnership with Council’s Community Planning team.
Aimed at giving young people a voice in politics, the project provides an insight into decision making and an opportunity to represent the views and needs of the next generation of citizens.
Councillor Schenning said: “The Youth Group initiative was first introduced in Causeway Coast and Glens in 2019, and it was officially launched in 2020 against the backdrop of the pandemic.
“Despite the challenges of recent years, the group is committed to representing the voice of our young people and as one of Council’s Youth Champions I was very pleased to have this opportunity to enhance their understanding of local government by giving them a tour of the chamber where elected members make decisions and discuss Council business.
“It is vital that we support the next generation of community leaders and I hope the group left feeling more informed about local democracy issues.”
