Project Description

The project will involve local people in its’ reimagination in terms of animation, interpretive signage, viewpoints, and development of nature walks and walking for nature.

Altnahinch Dam is located near Loughguile in rural North Antrim. The project will extend the raised boardwalk along the southern and eastern banks of the reservoir to enable walkers to complete a circular walk around the reservoir. This will ensure the accessibility to a large cohort of people living in the North Antrim area.



The project includes:

  • Educational & Information Programme
  • Health & Wellbeing Programme
  • Biodiversity & Natural Environment Programme
  • Angling Programme

The project will address the following key issues

  • Provide an educational & information programme so local people can learn about the history and heritage of the dam through workshops, taster sessions, stone masonry and quarrying.
  • Support local people through health and well-being programmes
  • Awareness of the unique eco-system and the biodiversity that is part of the dam landscape as well as local flora and fauna and to learn more about the local bat habitation.

By the end of the project the following targets will have been achieved.

  • 465 participants recruited
  • A minimum of 26 hours of meaningful engagement per participant
  • Local people and visitors will be better educated about this resource in terms of its’ purpose, its’ history as a quarry and as an opportunity to walk and enjoy.
  • Provision of a safe and secure rural walking route.
  • Practical Accessibility to Altnahinch Dam
