Project Description

The project includes the development of a fully accessible walk at Benbradagh mountain in Dungiven. It provides an opportunity to animate and support some of the cultural heritage and unique shared history of the area, creating an Outdoor Recreation Facility, accessible through path improvement, outdoor furniture installation, directional and interpretive signage. This project will encourage and increase the potential for increased mobility, on a cross-community/cultural basis.

The project will address the following key issues:

  • Provision of outdoor recreation that can be used as tools for peace and reconciliation through organised and structured activity and animation.
  • Encourage groups/organisations/users of this facility to understand “sustainability” in their approach and their ability to attract new users to enjoy and respect the environment in their common interest or passion (e.g., hillwalking, hiking, curiosity of heritage).
  • The regenerative nature of a project that supports the natural environment and the relationship between a community and its’ environment, and the accompanying ripple-effect it will prove to have on the immediate locality

By the end of the programme, the following targets will have been achieved:

  • Increased promotion of Benbradagh Mountain as an outdoor recreation site.
  • Increased cross-community and inter-cultural footfall into the Benbradagh area
  • Increase footfall and cross-community mobility within Dungiven for services
  • Understanding of local history & heritage and its’ importance to the immediate locality.
  • Engage with 200 participants who have contributed and learned together over the project.
  • Delivery of Hillwalking/Hiking Programme for 50 participants
  • Creation of an Environmental/Biodiversity Programme to help participants engage in conservation
