Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council is proud to announce that 80 of our buildings and facilities are now officially recognised as Breastfeeding Friendly.

Parents can now find all these locations listed on the ‘Breastfeeding Welcome Here’ website, making it easier to know where breastfeeding is supported when out and about.

You can view the full list of sites in the Council area here:

The ‘Breastfeeding Welcome Here scheme’, led by the Public Health Agency, aims to help mums feel comfortable feeding their babies in public places. Many women stop breastfeeding earlier than they planned because they don’t feel confident feeding outside the home. This scheme aims to change that by making sure public spaces are welcoming, supportive and free from judgement.

By joining the scheme, each Council site promises that:

  • Breastfeeding is welcome in all public areas.
  • No mum will ever be asked to stop or move somewhere else.
  • Staff understand the importance of supporting breastfeeding families.

Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Councillor Dawn Huggins welcomed the announcement, saying: “We want parents to feel relaxed and supported when they’re out in our Borough.

“By making 80 of our sites breastfeeding friendly, we’re sending a clear message that families are welcome and valued. This is a simple but important step that helps make everyday life easier for mums.”

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Diversity Ambassador, Councillor Cara McShane added: “Breastfeeding is a normal part of life, but many mums still feel unsure about feeding in public.

“By registering our sites and making this information easy to find, we’re removing barriers and helping build a more inclusive community.

“This means families are more confident getting involved in local activities and that kind of practical inclusion strengthens our Borough.”

The PHA emphasises significant health benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby, including reduced risks of infections, allergies, childhood obesity and certain cancers.

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council commits to breaking down barriers and making local spaces feel comfortable for everyone, and we’ll keep working to make our towns and villages welcoming for all who live, work and visit here.
