Significant progress has been made on the new Ballycastle Leisure Centre, with the building and surrounding site continuing to take shape as construction moves into its next phase.

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has provided a further update on the major leisure development at Quay Road, Ballycastle, where work is advancing across the main building, outdoor facilities, roads and landscaping.

The new Leisure Centre represents a significant investment in leisure and recreation for Ballycastle and the wider community. Once complete, it will provide a modern range of facilities designed to support people of all ages and abilities, including a 25m four-lane swimming pool, gym and fitness facilities, activity studio, health suite and bouldering wall.

The wider development will also feature an Accessible Play Park, Pump Track and walking and cycling provision, creating new opportunities for sport, recreation, outdoor activity and wellbeing.

Over the spring and summer months, construction has gathered considerable momentum, supported by favourable weather conditions and continued partnership working between the project's key stakeholders.

Key milestones across the site include:

  • Pool hall: Installation of the glazing is underway, bringing the external elements of the building closer to completion.
  • Bouldering wall: The wall has been installed and is awaiting its final fixings.
  • Swimming pool and changing facilities: The majority of tiling is now in place, with further works continuing.
  • Activity areas: The individual spaces within the building are becoming increasingly defined, giving a clearer picture of the completed facility.
  • Pump Track: The Pump Track is now complete and in place.
  • Accessible Play Park: Work is continuing, with the play area taking shape.
  • Roads, access and landscaping: Works are progressing across the wider development, including the surrounding roads, access and landscaped areas.

Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Dawn Huggins, said:

“It is extremely encouraging to see Ballycastle Leisure Centre continuing to take shape, with significant milestones now visible across the site.

“For the local community, this is an important stage in the project. What was once a vision for Ballycastle is now becoming increasingly tangible, with the swimming pool, bouldering wall, Pump Track and other elements of the development giving a real sense of what this new facility will offer.

“This is a significant investment in Ballycastle and the wider area. Once complete, the Leisure Centre and its surrounding facilities will provide opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to swim, exercise, climb, play, walk and cycle, supporting active lifestyles and community wellbeing.

“There is still work to be completed, but the progress made in recent months is very positive. We look forward to keeping the community informed as the project moves towards completion.”

As the project moves into the autumn and winter period, attention will increasingly turn to completing the internal areas and finalising the remaining external works, including roads, access and landscaping.

Council will continue to provide regular updates as the development progresses, with further information to follow on the facilities, activities and programmes that will be available to the community.

Throughout construction, Council has also been documenting key stages of the project, capturing the transformation of the site and providing the community with an opportunity to follow its journey from construction through to completion.
