A grant from the Chewing Gum Task Force, administered by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, will help Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council tackle the persistent issue of chewing gum litter.
As part of this funding programme, works have been carried out within the Limavady area to target locations most affected by gum staining.
Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council successfully secured funding through the Chewing Gum Task Force Grant Scheme to support the removal of chewing gum from public spaces and invest in measures that will improve the Council's ability to tackle gum litter over the longer term.
The Chewing Gum Task Force, established by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and administered by Keep Britain Tidy, provides funding to local authorities across the UK to remove chewing gum from streets and pavements while promoting responsible disposal through behaviour change initiatives. The scheme is funded by major gum manufacturers and has supported councils nationwide in improving the cleanliness of town centres and public spaces.
This funding has provided an excellent opportunity for the Council to invest in dedicated equipment that will support our cleansing teams in addressing chewing gum staining more efficiently. The new equipment has helped improve the appearance of pedestrian areas and will continue to support future gum removal maintenance activities beyond the programme.
The Council would like to remind residents and visitors that disposing of chewing gum responsibly by using litter bins helps reduce cleaning costs, protects the local environment and contributes to cleaner and attractive communities for everyone to enjoy.
