Flowerfield Arts Centre in Portstewart is delighted to be taking part in this year’s August Craft Month, the annual celebration of craft delivered in partnership by the Design & Crafts Council and Craft NI.
A varied programme of hands-on workshops will inspire participants to get creative, learn new techniques and celebrate the craftsmanship and creativity at the heart of making.
Flowerfield Arts Centre is inviting adults to explore glass, ceramics, pottery and basketry through a series of hands-on workshops led by experienced tutors and makers, with each session offering the opportunity to learn new techniques while creating a unique handmade piece to take home.
Inspired by the coastal landscape surrounding Flowerfield, the programme begins with workshops that celebrate the textures, colours and forms of the shoreline.
Participants can explore ceramic hand-building techniques to create a seaside-inspired mirror frame decorated with coastal details such as shells, waves, pebbles and marine life, or capture the calm beauty of the coast through layered glass techniques, creating depth and movement in their own glass artwork.
For those interested in developing their pottery skills, ceramic tutor Fiona Shannon will lead a four-day intensive throwing course, offering participants the opportunity to gain a focused introduction to working on the potter’s wheel.
From centring clay and shaping forms to creating their own handmade vessels, the course provides an immersive creative experience for those looking to develop their practice.
The programme concludes with a full-day gathering basket masterclass led by master crafter Louise McLean of Atlantic Craft NI, where participants will explore traditional basket-making processes and techniques while creating their own practical and beautifully crafted basket.
