The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council attended the official renaming of McKinley Park in Dervock, celebrating the village's remarkable connection to the United States through William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States.
The renaming follows a Notice of Motion by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council and recognises Dervock's unique place in American history during the 250th anniversary year of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence. William McKinley's great-great-grandfather, James McKinley, emigrated from the nearby townland of Conagher in 1743, creating a lasting link between the local area and the White House.
The event, organised by Dervock Community Association, also honoured the late Peter Thompson with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque recognising his dedication to preserving and promoting the village's history. As founder of The Dervock Page, Peter spent many years researching Dervock's heritage while championing local businesses and community initiatives.
Alongside the plaque, a new interpretation panel featuring a QR code linking visitors to The Dervock Page will ensure Peter's extensive research remains accessible to future generations while helping visitors discover the area's rich history.
Speaking after the event, the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Councillor Dawn Huggins, said:" It was an honour to attend this special occasion as we officially renamed McKinley Park and recognised Dervock's unique historical connection to the United States through President William McKinley. This is a fitting way to celebrate the village's place in history during this significant anniversary year.
"It was also particularly meaningful to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of Peter Thompson, whose dedication to researching and preserving Dervock's heritage has helped ensure that local history can continue to be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. The commemorative plaque and interpretation panel provide a lasting tribute to Peter's work and his commitment to sharing the story of Dervock with future generations."
The Mayor also congratulated Dervock Community Association on delivering the project through funding secured from the Heritage 250: Connagher Connection to the White House programme and thanked everyone involved in bringing the initiative to life, ensuring both Dervock's historic international links and Peter Thompson's lasting legacy continue to be celebrated.
