The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Dawn Huggins, recently welcomed pupils and staff from DH Christie Memorial Primary School to Cloonavin in recognition of an exceptional year of sporting achievement.
The reception celebrated the school's football team following their success in the 2026 Doherty Shield. After progressing into the Shield competition following the opening stages of the Doherty Cup, the team battled their way to the final at Coleraine Showgrounds, where they were crowned 2026 Doherty Shield champions. Their success is a testament to the commitment, resilience and teamwork demonstrated throughout the competition.
The Mayor also recognised the school's continued excellence at the Inter-Schools Athletics Championships at Rugby Avenue. Returning as reigning champions, pupils once again delivered an impressive team performance, recording first-place finishes in the 100m, 400m and long jump, alongside a runner-up finish in the cricket ball throw and second-place finishes in both the boys' and girls' relay events.
Together, these achievements highlight the depth of sporting talent within the school and the dedication of its pupils and staff.
Speaking after the reception, Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Dawn Huggins: "It was a pleasure to welcome the pupils and staff from DH Christie Memorial Primary School and congratulate them on what has been an outstanding year for sport.
“Their achievements on both the football pitch and athletics track are a testament to the hard work, commitment and team spirit shown throughout the year. They have represented their school and local community with great pride and should all be incredibly proud of what they have accomplished.
“I would also like to congratulate the teachers, coaches and everyone who has supported the pupils along the way. Their encouragement and dedication have played an important role in these fantastic achievements."
The reception formed part of the Mayor's ongoing programme of recognising individuals and groups who have made a positive contribution to their school, community and the Borough through outstanding achievement.
