Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Councillor Oliver McMullan, made a special visit to Coleraine Cougars last week.
Coleraine Cougars Special Olympics Club was founded in 2012. The club offers inclusive basketball training and competition for children and adults with an intellectual disability and is affiliated with Special Olympics Ireland.
Mayor Councillor Oliver McMullan said: “It was a real pleasure to visit the Coleraine Cougars and see first-hand the incredible work being done to promote inclusion, confidence and teamwork through sport.
“The enthusiasm shown by every player was truly inspiring. The Cougars are not only building basketball skills, they are also creating friendships, opportunities and a strong sense of community for people with learning disabilities across the area.
“I would like to congratulate everyone involved, players, coaches, volunteers and families, for the dedication and support they give to this fantastic team.”
The Mayor also wished four athletes, Kevin, Liam, Jacob and William, good luck following their selection for Team Ulster at the Ireland Summer Games, which will be held in Dublin.
Run by 12 volunteers, the club has 30 athletes and welcomes new male and female athletes to come along and try it out.
