The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Dawn Huggins, has joined visitors and local residents in Limavady to celebrate 30 years of friendship between the town and its French twin town, Vigneux-sur-Seine.

The anniversary marks three decades since the official Twinning Agreement was signed at the Drummond Hotel in Limavady on 7 September 1996, followed by a signing ceremony in Vigneux-sur-Seine on 12 September that year.

To celebrate this milestone, representatives from Vigneux-sur-Seine joined members of the Limavady Twinning Committee and the local community for a weekend of activities and events across the town.

The programme included a photographic exhibition at the Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre, showcasing memories from across the 30-year relationship, as well as live entertainment in Drumceatt Square, traditional music and performances from the Roe Valley Singers. The celebrations continued on Saturday evening with a Gala Dinner at the Drummond Hotel, bringing together representatives and guests from both communities.

Local businesses also played a part in the celebrations through a shop window competition, with the Mayors joining the judging. Yellow Bird was announced as the winner of the competition. A tree planting ceremony provided another special moment during the anniversary celebrations, creating a lasting symbol of the friendship between the two communities.

Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Dawn Huggins, said:

“I am delighted to mark 30 years of friendship between Limavady and Vigneux-sur-Seine. This twinning has created lasting friendships and provided wonderful opportunities to share our cultures and traditions. I would like to thank everyone who has played a part in maintaining this valued relationship over the past 30 years.

“The tree planting was a fitting way to mark this special anniversary and provides a lasting symbol of the friendship between our two communities. I look forward to seeing this relationship continue for many years to come.”

The anniversary provided an opportunity for both communities to celebrate three decades of shared experiences, cultural exchange and lasting friendships, while looking ahead to the future of the twinning relationship.

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council would like to thank the Limavady Twinning Committee, the Vigneux Twinning Committee, local businesses and everyone who helped make the 30th anniversary celebrations such a success.
