A brand-new celebration of folk and traditional music is coming to Ballycastle this May, as Lir Sessions launches a five-day programme of live music, cultural events and immersive experiences from 21–25 May 2026.
Showcasing both established and emerging talent, Lir Sessions will bring together headline concerts, intimate performances, free outdoor entertainment and a vibrant session trail across venues throughout Ballycastle.
Combining more than 40 free events with a number of headline performances, Lir Sessions is set to attract visitors and music lovers from across the region and beyond.
The programme opens on Thursday 21 May with Women of the North at Yarn, a powerful concert celebrating the women shaping folk and trad music across the North. Featuring acclaimed artists Ríoghnach Connolly, Deirdre Havlin and Katie Sands, and hosted by Aoife Scott, the event sets the tone for a weekend rooted in both heritage and contemporary expression.
On Friday 22 May, audiences can enjoy an intimate homecoming performance from one of Northern Ireland’s most celebrated voices, Frances Black, at the Marine Hotel. The evening offers an opportunity to experience one of the country’s most recognisable artists in an up-close setting.
Saturday 23 May marks the first full day of outdoor activity, with Ballycastle’s seafront coming to life through a packed programme of free events. Visitors can explore the Makers Market, enjoy live performances from artists including Niall Hanna and Rachael McGarrity, and take part in interactive experiences such as instrument “come and try” sessions.
The day concludes with The Big Céilí at Yarn, a high-energy evening of traditional dancing led by the Colla Céilí Band and caller Ronan Eastwood, welcoming participants of all experience levels.
The festival continues on Sunday 24 May with another full day of music and activity across the town. Highlights include a live podcast hosted by broadcaster Lynette Fay, performances from The Raparees, North Coast Dance Company and Lir Dancers Ballycastle, as well as traditional music showcases, dance workshops and family-friendly programming. The evening programme features live music across multiple venues, alongside headline performances from acts including Super Céilí.
On Monday 25 May, the festival draws to a close with a relaxed programme of music and market activity, including performances from local Comhaltas groups and a Ballycastle Youth Session, celebrating the next generation of traditional musicians.
At the heart of Lir Sessions is the festival’s Session Trail, running each evening from Thursday to Sunday across a range of local venues. These informal gatherings offer audiences the chance to experience traditional music in its most authentic setting, where musicians come together to share tunes in a spontaneous environment. With free entry to all Session Trail events, visitors are encouraged to explore Ballycastle and discover live music throughout the town.
In addition to its music programme, Lir Sessions will feature a range of interactive and cultural experiences, including Irish language pop-up sessions, dance performances and opportunities to engage directly with traditional instruments.
Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Councillor Oliver McMullan, said: “Lir Sessions is a fantastic addition to our events calendar and a wonderful celebration of the rich musical and cultural traditions deeply rooted across the Causeway Coast and Glens. This festival not only showcases exceptional local and international talent, but also creates opportunities for communities and visitors alike to come together, experience traditional music in unique settings, and enjoy everything Ballycastle has to offer.
