Power in Our Hands Film Screens in Limavady

A fascinating and moving film about the struggle of the deaf community for civil rights, Power in Our Hands, screens at the Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre on Tuesday 14th June at 6.30pm.

Provided in partnership with the British Deaf Association, Power in Our Hands utilises the British Deaf Association’s unique film archive footage and interviews to create a ground-breaking film which tells the story of the United Kingdom’s deaf culture, community and language. The film encourages deaf and hearing impaired people to celebrate their history and enabling hearing audiences to gain invaluable insight into their journey as a community.

At the centre of their protracted struggle for equal rights has been the campaign for the official recognition of British Sign Language (BSL). It was finally recognised as a minority language by the government in 2003, a landmark breakthrough for the community.

Desima Connolly, Arts & Cultural Services Officer, commented, “We are delighted to be one of the few cultural venues outside of Queen’s Film Theatre, Belfast, to screen this poignant and significant film.

“We have received great interest already and we look forward to developing further cultural partnership initiatives with fantastic supportive local organisations such as Hands that Talk.”
