Residents encouraged to ‘recycle right’ during Recycle Week

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council is encouraging residents to continue to ‘recycle right’ during Recycle Week which begins on September 23rd.
In partnership with Recycle Now, the campaign aims to remind people about the long term benefits of recycling and how it can help to protect our environment.
Latest research from Recycle Now reveals that over 60% of UK households are recycling more than they were a year ago because of environmental concerns.
More and more households are recycling plastic drinks bottles and containers, toiletry and shampoo bottles, and other items including glass and metal tin cans. Nearly a third of people have cited environmental concerns as the main reason for doing more and others attribute it to an increased awareness of what can be recycled.
Whilst the research shows an increase in recycling, it also shows that households sometimes incorrectly put items like nappies, toys and toothpaste tubes in the recycling bin.
Top tips for recycling in the Causeway Coast and Glens:
- Recycle more plastic bottles, plastic pots, tubs and trays in your blue bin as well as paper and card, metal cans, cartons and glass
- Recycle food and garden waste in your brown bin
- Make sure these never go in the recycling bin: plastic bags, film and wrap
- Make your black bin the last resort
The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Councillor Sean Bateson said: “We are delighted with the number of people recycling with their blue and brown bins and want to see that continue. Our recycling rate is at its highest ever – approximately 50% during the last 6 months. This is a fantastic achievement and one to be proud of. We want to maintain and improve this recycling rate, especially over the winter months, by continuing to recycle our food waste in our brown bins and recycling right with our blue bins.”
Craig Stephens, Campaign Manager for Recycle Now, said: “This year we have all taken more notice of our impact on the environment, and realised that recycling is part of reducing that impact. Here in Causeway Coast and Glens it’s no different – more and more of us are recycling, so the next step is to make sure we get our recycling right. What and how we recycle really matters. Recycling an item rather than throwing it in the general rubbish bin means that it will be dealt with in the most environmentally friendly way, keeping materials in use and out of the environment.
