Through The Looking Glass project continues with Small Worlds Café event in Limavady
Fri, February 14, 2020
Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Good Relations team has hosted an exhibition and refugee awareness session to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
The events took place as part of the Through The Looking Glass programme which aims to encourage people to explore different cultures and traditions.
The refugee awareness workshop, delivered in partnership with the Vulnerable Syrian Refugee Consortium, connected closely with the Holocaust Memorial Day theme of ‘Stand Together’. The training by Denise Wright was well received by statutory and community partners who took part. In addition, there was a recognition of how throughout history, societies have deliberately been fractured by marginalising certain groups, many of whom have fled or sought refuge from persecution, and how these tactics can be challenged by individuals standing together and speaking out against oppression.
As a follow on to this, the Good Relations team will host a Small Worlds Café on Friday 20th March from 10.30am - 1pm in Roe Valley Arts & Cultural Centre in Limavady.
To register please contact Bebhinn McKinley on 028 777 60312 or email Bebhinn.mckinley@causewaycoastandglens.gov.uk before March 10th.
Small Worlds® are café-style events hosted by members of Belfast Friendship Club. The workshops provide a safe space for participants to encounter people from different backgrounds and parts of the world and are managed by an experienced facilitator.
They give a glimpse into real lives including:
- growing up in a different part of the world, a different culture or religious background, a different environment or climate
- living far away from your family and friends
- challenges of being new to Northern Ireland
- different reasons for moving to Northern Ireland.
If you require assistance with transport, this could be arranged dependent on numbers from each area.
