Formal Consultation on the Draft Equality Impact Assessment for a proposed Plaque Commemorating Mark Ashton in Portrush Town Hall

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council is consulting on a Draft Equality Impact Assessment relating to the proposed installation of a plaque in Portrush Town Hall commemorating Mark Ashton.

Mark Ashton was raised in Portrush and became known internationally for his contribution to LGBT rights and his support for mining communities during the miners' strike of 1984-85.

The purpose of the Equality Impact Assessment is to consider the potential effects of the proposal on the promotion of equality of opportunity and good relations in accordance with Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998.

This Draft EQIA sets out the information considered to date, the potential equality and good relations impacts identified, and possible measures to address adverse impacts and strengthen positive outcomes. The findings remain open to review based on the evidence received during this period of formal consultation.

The proposal is that the plaque will be installed at a suitable location within Portrush Town Hall. The precise position will be determined having regard to the available space, accessibility and other practical considerations. The proposed wording of the plaque is set out in the attached report

The Council would particularly welcome views on the equality and good relations impacts identified in the Draft EQIA, information about any impacts that may not have been identified, relevant evidence or experience, views on the measures proposed to address potential adverse impacts, and suggestions for strengthening the positive contribution of the proposal.

A questionnaire has been attached to help guide you in your response. The consultation will remain open until 15th January 2027

Alternative formats or a paper survey can be made available on request.
