Participants must sign up and register for the event ten weeks prior. Valley Running Club will then complete a ten week training plan with participants with the aim to preparing those ‘comfortable couch potatoes’ to ‘lean, keen running beans’. In conjunction with Council’s ‘Health For Life’ programme, the event organisers are confident everyone can achieve the goal of competing and running this 5k event. This is a 5k event with a difference, but why is this 5k event so different to other 5k events? Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s, Active Lifestyles Officer, Kieran Coyle explained: “People who register will be on the same fitness journey as you and also share the achievement of running this event with your new running buddies. “Can I do this? I hear you ask yourself… yes you can! On the 15th December 2013, ‘Health For Life’ and ‘Valley Running Club’ organised a simpler event with a greater distance of 10k. “Everyone who took part went through similar a ten week training plan. Sixty of those who participated had never ran or exercised but managed to complete their 10k goal.’ “The ten week programme offers participants, entry to the 5k event, plus ten weeks of coached training sessions from an experienced coach, a must have t-shirt and the opportunity to meet new people with similar goals. “To date, everyone who has graduated to ‘runner bean’ has continued to run with Valley Running club and have achieved some amazing running goals.” Programme graduate, Gillian McFarland Sweeney, on completion of the 10k event said: “If you had asked me two months ago if I could run 10k, I would have said never, but today I did it with the help of great friends at Valley Running Club! “To those interested in taking part in the 5k race, I’d tell them it is not going to be easy… let’s be honest here! You will get aches and pains, question why you are doing something so uncomfortable, but the health gains will outweigh these starting pains! ‘It’s simple, it’s like a rusty chain on a bike. It’s not going to move freely and well until it gets a drop of oil put on it, to help it move. Valley Running Club is the oil that will get you to the start line on the 24th October.” For more information on the programme, contact Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Active Lifestyles Officer, Kieran Coyle at Roe Valley Leisure Centre via telephone at 028 777 64009 or email kieran.coyle@causewaycoastandglens.gov.uk.
