An afternoon of nostalgia at Platinum Jubilee Tea Dance

An afternoon of nostalgia at Platinum Jubilee Tea Dance

Thu, May 19, 2022

Guests have enjoyed a trip down memory lane at a Vintage Tea Dance held as part of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The Mayor, Councillor Richard Holmes, and Alderman Michelle Knight-McQuillan (Chair of Council’s Jubilee Working Group) were among those who soaked up the nostalgic atmosphere at Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre. They joined residents from Cornfield Care Home and Mullough House and members of Roe Valley Residents Association, Limavady Community Development Initiative and Glack Social Club for an afternoon of socialising, dancing, and refreshments.

Reflecting on the occasion, the Mayor said:

“The celebratory spirit on show at the Vintage Tea Dance summed up everything we want to achieve through our Platinum Jubilee programme as we mark this very special date.

“Thanks to the fantastic live performance from Driftwood, we were transported back to the 1940’s and 50’s for this very memorable get-together.

“It was a great afternoon of fun and laughter and I hope everyone there enjoyed it as much as I did.”

The event was the first of four tea dances taking place as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in Limavady and Flowerfield Arts Centre in Portstewart.

The programme also includes a series of royal film screenings, with bookings available now for The Queen’s Corgi, Encanto, Spencer, and The Queen along with a brand-new documentary, Elizabeth II: A Portrait in Parts (2022), an uplifting and fresh modern chronicle of the extraordinary 70-year reign of Elizabeth II.

For those interested in getting creative, book now for workshops with a Royal twist including floristry with Elaine Taylor, glassmaking with Eleanor-Jane McCartney, and silversmith jewellery with Diane Lyness or ‘Decades’, a new reflective Creative Writing course.

For children, there is free floral headband making in Ballymoney Town Hall and Sheskburn House, Ballycastle during June (booking required) and ‘castle and crown’ themed workshops at Flowerfield.

Community events include a spectacular outdoor projection of key moments in the life of Queen Elizabeth II at Flowerfield on June 1st.  The Big Community Bunting Stitch-up, a series of free workshops, continue on May 21st and 28th at Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre, with further venues across the Borough to be announced.
