Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has announced the appointment of Councillor Tanya Elder as its new Age Friendly Champion, reinforcing its commitment to supporting older people.

The role of Age Friendly Champion will see Councillor Elder act as an advocate for older residents, ensuring their voices are heard and reflected in Council decision-making, services and future planning.

Speaking about her appointment, Councillor Tanya Elder said: “I am delighted to take on the role of Age Friendly Champion for Causeway Coast and Glens.

“As Age Friendly Champion, I will work closely with local older people and partners to ensure their voices shape council decisions and services, helping to create a community where everyone can age well.

“I am committed to listening to older residents, understanding their experiences and ensuring their views lead to real, practical improvements. This role is about making a difference—supporting initiatives that tackle isolation, promote wellbeing and ensure older people feel valued and included in our communities.”

Stephanie Scott, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Age Friendly Coordinator, highlighted the importance of the role in delivering meaningful change:

“The appointment of an Age Friendly Champion is a significant step forward in strengthening our Age Friendly work across the Borough.

“This role is not just about raising awareness, it is about influencing decisions, championing the needs of older people and driving real, lasting change within Council and beyond.

We look forward to working closely with Councillor Elder as she connects with older residents and partners to ensure their voices are central to everything we do.”

Working closely with the Age Friendly Partnership, Age Friendly Coordinator, local community groups and residents, the role will see Councillor Elder engaging with older residents through community visits, listening events and partnership work, helping to identify key issues and opportunities.

Councillor Elder’s first action will be to support Global Intergenerational Week, beginning this Friday, April 24.

This global initiative celebrates the power of bringing different generations together, promoting understanding, reducing loneliness and building stronger, more connected communities.

The introduction of the Age Friendly Champion role reflects the Council’s ongoing commitment to becoming a more age-friendly place, where older people are supported, respected and empowered to live full and active lives.
