A case of a dog attack in which a small dog had to be put to sleep after being attacked by another dog, has been heard at Coleraine Magistrates Court.
On 23rd September 2024 Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council received a complaint that a large dog had attacked a Shih Tzu in the Station Road area of Ballykelly.
The Shih Tzu was immediately taken to a veterinary surgeon but unfortunately had to be put to sleep because of the severity of its injuries.
Following an investigation, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council instigated legal proceedings against Mr Paul Kyte of Ballykelly for allowing a dog under his control to attack and cause injury to another animal contrary to Article 28 (2) (b) of The Dogs ((NI) Order 1983.
The case was heard earlier this month at Coleraine Magistrates Court where Mr. Kyte pleaded guilty to the charge. District Judge Peter King issued a fine of £350, a Compensation Order of £400 with associated courts costs.
Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council would like to remind all dog owners that their dogs must be under control at all times to prevent such incidences.
Council takes any reports of dog attacks seriously and will instigate legal proceedings where appropriate.
