Celebrate August Craft Month at Flowerfield Arts Centre

Flowerfield Arts Centre is thrilled to present a month-long programme of activities to celebrate August Craft Month, Ireland’s unique celebration of the craft sector presented by Craft NI and the Design and Crafts Council.

Residents and visitors alike are invited to explore, learn, and create with some of the most talented makers in the region.

The highlight is the Causeway Craft Trail Maker Showcase, running from 3rd – 31st August, featuring exceptional works by renowned artists such as Andrea Spencer, E.J. McCartney, and Patricia Millar. This Exhibition launches on Saturday 3rd August when John Wilkinson of Valkyrie Crafts will also be offering a unique Traditional Spoon Making workshop, teaching the ancient art of utensil carving.

Throughout the month, there will hands-on expert-led workshops including, including Fused Glass with Natasha Duddy, an Intensive Throwing Masterclass, and Sculpt a Sea Swimmer workshop with Fiona Shannon.

Alongside this, August Craft Month will have a Stained Glass Tiffany Style workshop with E. J. McCartney, and a thrilling practical exploration into ancient Japanese art of Raku with Malcolm Murchison offering an insight into thrilling pottery techniques.

Fiona Shannon will also be leading a workshop exploring Irish Neolithic Pottery with archaeologist Catriona Brogan. There will also be a rare opportunity to see artist Andrea Spencer demonstrate an advanced glass work skill. Attendees will be able to see how Andrea makes her delicate flameworked glass sculptures that are inspired by natural forms. Attendees will also have the opportunity to try their hand at melting glass in the flame.

 Additionally, during the final week of August, Flowerfield welcomes textile artist Janey Moffatt to lead a series of workshops, including Natural Dyeing with Foraged Materials, Free Machine Embroidery & Heat Transfer Techniques and Indigo Dyeing with Shibori. Each session offers a chance to develop new skills and create unique textile pieces. 

Janey Moffat will be presenting her Exhibition All Us Women from 7 September at Flowerfield.  Before her exhibition opens Flowerfield are welcoming Janey for a short residency in September during which she will facilitate free community textile workshop.
