Two stunning contemporary art and craft exhibitions exploring the power of our local landscape open at the Roe Valley Arts & Cultural Centre, Limavady on 18th June.

A Language of Landscape by Stuart Cairns is exhibited in both Keady and Broighter Galleries and Drawing as Exploring by Katy English is displaid in the Ritter Gallery.

Artist and Silversmith Stuart Cairns combines natural materials and found objects to create artefacts in the tradition of tableware, tools and domestic objects. Stuart translates his experience of walking, collecting and making over the past year through a series of photographs and material drawings, reflecting on our connection with the landscape and environment.

In 2014, Stuart was awarded the first Rosy James Memorial Craft Bursary and he is currently exhibiting at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London as part of Silverspeaks, a celebration of silversmithing. Stuart has also exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery, London, and in many international arts venues. He is a member of the British Designer Silversmiths and a part-time lecturer in the University of Ulster.

Dividing her time between London and the Glens of Antrim, Katy English’s work consistently refers to the North Antrim landscape that she loves. Using drawing to investigate the natural world, both seen and unseen, Katy has exhibited throughout the UK as well as being awarded multiple public sculpture commissions.

Desima Connolly, Arts & Cultural Services Officer, commented, “Celebrating our relationship with nature, these exhibitions by two high profile contemporary artists could not be more apt considering the world renowned landscape and scenic beauty of the Causeway Coast and Glens area.

“We also have a screening about the sell-out exhibition Painting the Modern Garden by the Royal Academy of Arts on 17th and 18thJune. This event and the exhibitions are a must for all garden, horticulture and nature enthusiasts as well as art lovers.”

Both exhibitions continue until 30 July and admission is free. All are welcome to the exhibition launch on Saturday 18th June from 2pm. For further information, visit www.roevalleyarts.com or contact the team on 02877760650.
