Council gears up for Bike Week 2017

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council is encouraging everyone throughout the Borough to ‘get on your bike’ for ‘Bike Week 2017’.
Taking place from 10th- 18th June, the free programme of cycling events will give local residents the chance to get active whilst enjoying the picturesque scenery of our area.
Launching the event, The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Alderman Maura Hickey said: “We are delighted to offer a fabulous range of cycling events for everyone in the area during Bike Week. Perfect for families and experienced cyclists, the programme caters for every age and ability level. Cycling is a great way of increasing fitness while enjoying the landscape of our beautiful Borough.”
National Bike Week kicks off with a ‘Pedalling Picnic’ on Sunday 11th June at 2.45 pm. Cyclists can enjoy a 12 mile cycle ride from Coleraine to Downhill Forest and back again with the beautiful backdrop of Binevenagh in their view.
Ballykelly Bank Leisure Cycle, a leisurely 11 mile ride on the shore of Lough Foyle, takes place on Monday 12th June at 6.45pm. Cyclists can enjoy the quiet country roads with opportunities to stop and enjoy the wildlife scenery.
Wednesday 14th June sees the annual Bike Week BBQ and cycle ride at Cloonavin in Coleraine. The 6 mile cycle will start at 6:45pm, followed by a BBQ. With an optional 3 mile cycle available for young children, this event is perfect for families.
The final cycling trip is The Lower Bann Leisure Cycle on Saturday 17th June. The 16 cycle with low average speeds takes place from 10am – 1pm. Participants are asked to meet at Riverside Park in Ballymoney and from there they can enjoy the beautiful views over the Antrim Hills along minor country roads.
Mark Strong, Coast and Countryside Unit for Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council said: “Cycling is such an affordable and healthy mode of transport and I would encourage everyone to get involved in our week long programme. We hope the weather is kind to us, but I would remind all participants to come prepared for rain, hail or shine!”
