Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council is reminding dog owners that seasonal beach restrictions are in place from 1 June to 15 September to help protect public safety, support responsible dog ownership and ensure that everyone can enjoy local beaches during the busy summer months.

During this period, dogs are prohibited from entering designated areas of the following beaches across the borough. The restrictions are clearly signposted at each location and apply by law:

  • Castlerock Beach - from the main vehicular entrance westwards to Black Stone Cottage.
  • Downhill Beach - from the row of white wooden posts westwards at the entrance to the old pillbox towards Benone. (access behind the Blue Flag area).
  • Salmon Rock Beach, Portballintrae - Beach at car park.
  • Portrush West Strand Beach - from the steps at Castle Erin to the Harbour Wall at South Pier.
  • Portrush East Strand Beach - from the Arcadia eastwards to the stream.
  • Small beach area at the Arcadia – the entire beach area
  • Whiterocks Beach - from the beach access eastwards towards Dunluce Castle.

Council’s Enforcement Team, supported by enforcement officers from National Enforcement Solutions, will carry out patrols throughout the summer to ensure compliance with these restrictions. Any person allowing their dog to enter a prohibited area is liable to be issued with an £80 Fixed Penalty Notice or may be subject to prosecution.

Signs have been erected at all affected locations to remind visitors of the restrictions and help dog owners plan their visits.

Council is urging all dog owners to act responsibly by lifting dog waste immediately and disposing of it correctly. Once bagged, dog waste can be placed in any bin within the Borough, making it quick and convenient for owners to dispose of it responsibly.

Littering, including discarded food packaging, takeaway containers, cigarette ends, and dog fouling, makes our local areas unsightly. Members of the public should use the bins provided when out and about or, alternatively, take their rubbish home for proper disposal. Littering, including dog fouling, is an offence and may result in enforcement action, with the issue of a Fixed Penalty Notice carrying a penalty of £200.

Dog owners are encouraged to check signage when visiting beaches and to act responsibly by keeping dogs out of restricted areas and disposing of dog waste appropriately.
