Currach journey marks the return of Rathlin Sound Maritime Festival

Mon, May 21, 2018

Two very special currachs have been rowed across Rathlin Sound as the countdown continues to an exciting maritime celebration.

Rathlin Sound Maritime Festival begins on Friday 25th May, and thousands of people are expected to visit Rathlin Island and Ballycastle where a packed programme of events and attractions awaits.

Named after the body of water which lies between the areas, the festival showcases their cultural connections, heritage and history.

The currachs, named the Danny Rowan and the Mary O, are now part of that story as they were made during the very first festival in 2013.

The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Councillor Joan Baird OBE was among those who welcomed the crews back to dry land: “Rathlin Sound Maritime Festival has developed in to a hugely important event for Ballycastle and Rathlin Island as communities come together to celebrate their maritime traditions. It was inspiring to see the crews complete this symbolic journey and bring the areas together ahead of the festival.”
The 10-day event begins on Friday 25th May with a traditional blessing of the boats to offer safe passage to all who work or travel on the water.

On Rathlin Island look out for the yarn bombings, kindness rocks, talks, tours, exhibitions, drontheims, a visit from the Vikings and a floating cinema with short films shown on board the Menapian Currach in Church Bay.

In Ballycastle, the Seafront area will feature Naturally North Coast and Glens Artisan Market, the Chowder Cook Off, cookery demonstrations, family activities, historical re-enactments, and live music and dance performances.

The musical highlight in Ballycastle is the unmissable Lisa McHugh who will perform in the Marine Hotel on Sunday 27th May.

The Festival has firmly established itself as a fabulous showcase of our rich maritime heritage. We invite you to enjoy the unique sights and sounds of the event and join in our celebrations.
