A unique event has given young people the chance to share their views and opinions with members of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.
‘Let’s Talk’, organised by the Council’s Good Relations team, was held on Monday (October 2nd) in Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre in Limavady. It provided secondary school pupils with an opportunity to become more aware of their local elected representatives and ask questions on issues important to them. The initiative was facilitated by Mark Carruthers from the BBC and Peter Osborne from Rubicon.
The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Joan Baird OBE, said: “I would like to thank all those elected members and young people who took part in this event. ‘Let’s Talk’ is much anticipated by both groups, and always generates interesting debate and thought-provoking questions. It’s an opportunity for Council members to directly communicate with young people, and get a sense of the issues which affect them.”
Mark Carruthers, who has been facilitating the event since it began, said: “I think it’s important to engage our young people, and make them aware that their voice really matters. ‘Let’s Talk’ is a great example of this engagement process in action, and I’m always encouraged by the interaction it generates. A highlight for me is seeing how views are exchanged and how participants are encouraged to look at things from new and varied perspectives.”
Patricia Cameron, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Good Relations Manager said: “We had a wide range of political opinion in the room, with good cross party representation and pupils sharing their views by voting anonymously with their digital handsets. This event is great fun but also provides an important opportunity for young people to voice their own opinions and to hear a variety of political opinions.”
