Families from across the Causeway Coast and Glens have come together to celebrate Global Intergenerational Week, with a series of successful events bringing grandparents and grandchildren closer through shared experiences.
Led by ‘Age Friendly Causeway’ and delivered in partnership with local Sure Start and Homestart projects including Coleraine SureStart Partnership, Dry Arch Children’s Centre, Dalriada Rural SureStart and Homestart Causeway, the week saw families take part in a range of activities.
Grandparents and grandchildren spent quality time together enjoying games, storytelling and singing traditional nursery rhymes, creating a wonderful atmosphere across all sessions. The events provided an opportunity for generations to connect, share experiences and build lasting memories.
Stephanie Scott, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Age Friendly Coordinator, said:
“Global Intergenerational Week has been a wonderful celebration of the connections that can be created when generations come together.
“It’s been lovely to see grandparents and grandchildren enjoying simple activities like games and nursery rhymes – those shared moments are so important in building strong relationships. We hope the resource packs will help families continue spending meaningful time together beyond the week.”
One grandparent who attended said: “It was such a lovely experience to spend that time together. We were singing songs I remember from when my own children were young, and now sharing them with my grandchild – it really means a lot.”
As part of the programme, Age Friendly Causeway provided each participating family with a resource pack containing information on what it means to be Age Friendly, the benefits of intergenerational engagement, and a selection of small gifts including books and drawing materials to encourage continued connection at home.
Global Intergenerational Week ran from 24–30 April 2026. It is a worldwide campaign celebrating the value of relationships across generations.
