More than 500 military personnel took part in this morning’s military parade through Coleraine, as the sun shone on the thousands lining the streets.

To officially open the event, Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Councillor Dawn Huggins hosted an Armed Forces Day breakfast for invited guests including Mrs Alison Millar, Lord Lieutenant of Londonderry; Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly MLA; Minister for Communities Gordon Lyons MLA; Veterans Commissioner David Johnstone MP and senior military personnel, Air Marshal Sean Reynolds (Royal Air Force); Brigadier Andrew Muddiman (Royal Navy); and Brigadier Piers Ashfield (British Army), as well as other civic and ministerial representatives.

The ceremonial Drumhead Service and Flag Raising Ceremony at the cenotaph paid tribute to the courage and commitment of those who serve in the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force.

In her address, Mayor Huggins said: “Today is a day of recognition. A day when we come together to honour the courage, commitment, and sacrifice of the men and women who serve, and who have served, in our Armed Forces.

As someone who has worn the uniform, this day carries a deeply personal meaning. I know firsthand the pride that comes with service—but also the challenges, the sacrifices, and the quiet resilience required not just on operations, but in everyday life.

We pay tribute to those currently serving, whether they are stationed here at home, deployed across the UK mainland or currently deployed on operations across the world, serving in challenging environments, far from home, far from loved ones and far from the comforts we often take for granted.

“Their service, whether seen or unseen, is essential. They stand watch so that the rest of us may live in safety. They represent the very best of our country, and their dedication is recognised and deeply appreciated by this country.”

The Band, Bugles, Pipes and Drums of the Royal Irish Regiment led the main parade through Coleraine Town Centre to thousands of spectators.

With a thriving military village along Christie Park, entertainment and interactive displays and an exciting RAF Falcons parachute display planned, it is shaping up to be a wonderful opportunity for residents and visitors to come together in appreciation of the service and sacrifice of the nation’s Armed Forces.
