Royal Academy of Arts Exhibition Screens in Limavady

A fascinating film Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse about the sell-out exhibition held at the Royal Academy of Arts, London earlier this year, screens at the Roe Valley Arts & Cultural Centre, Limavady on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th June at 12noon.

The internationally acclaimed exhibition traced the evolution of gardens and horticulture through the works of the world’s greatest artists, including Monet, Matisse, Van Gogh, Bonnard and more.

From the exhibition walls, to the wonder and beauty of artists’ gardens like Monet’s Giverny, the film takes a magical and widely travelled journey to discover how different contemporaries of Monet built and cultivated modern gardens to explore expressive motifs, abstract colour, decorative design and utopian ideas.

Guided by passionate curators, artists and garden enthusiasts, this remarkable collection of Impressionists, Post-Impressionists and avant-garde artists of the early twentieth century will reveal the rise of the modern garden in popular culture and the public’s enduring fascination with gardens today.

Desima Connolly, Arts & Cultural Services Officer, commented, “We are delighted to present more Exhibition on Screen films after the success of our Vincent Van Gogh screenings last year.

“These wonderful films allow everyone access and insight into the world’s greatest art, particularly those major exhibitions which not everyone can manage to attend. It is an ideal film for lovers of art, gardens and horticulturists and perfect for a relaxing June afternoon.”

The screening complements two contemporary art exhibitions, A Language of Landscape by Stuart Cairns and Drawing as Exploring by Katy English, also on display at the arts centre from 18th June to 30th July.
